If we were in Laurinburg at Morrison Manor Wednesday, July 22, outside the door of Rachel Jackson, we may have heard her sing to the Lord. “Precious Lord take my hand, lead me on through this land, I am tired, I am weak, I am worn. Through the storms through the night lead me on to the light, Precious Lord take my hand lead me on.” At 3:35 in the afternoon the Lord answered her song and said, “Rachel, your mansion is ready, come and get your reward.

Rachel Etta Jackson was born in Robeson County to the late Grealey and Ada Overstreet Jackson on June 2, 1944.

From birth, Rachel had physical handicaps, but her strong determination would not hold her back. As a young child she wanted to ride a tricycle, but she could not peddle with her legs so she laid on her stomach and used her hands on the peddles to make it possible for her to ride. This determination allowed her to attend church and associate with many friends. With her, the inability to walk may have slowed her down but didn’t stop her.

On Saturday at 2:00 pm, her family will meet at Alloway Cemetery in Red Springs to bid her earthly body good bye with a promise to meet her in Heaven to walk those streets like she has never been able to do here on earth. The funeral service will be conducted by Rev. Glen Odum.

Those left to morn her passing include her brother, Rick Jackson (Laura) and sister Brenda Jackson Fort (Jim) along with her nieces, nephews and friends.
